Custom Metal Nameplate Manufacturer

Metal nameplates that outlast the equipment

Custom metal nameplates, data plates, and identification tags — screen printed, etched, embossed, or Metalphoto® — built to withstand up to 25 years of outdoor exposure. Family-owned and manufacturing for more than 3,000 OEMs since 1946, with every step performed under one roof.

About metal nameplates

U.S. Nameplate manufactures custom metal nameplates for equipment that has to carry its identification for the life of the machine. Plates are fabricated from aluminum, anodized aluminum, Metalphoto®, brass, or stainless steel, marked by screen printing, digital printing, etching, Metalphoto imaging, or embossing, and finished by die cutting, digital cutting, laminating, or machining to your print.

Equipment nameplates can be built to withstand up to 25 years of outdoor exposure, and some products are guaranteed for 25 years or more. That is the practical reason OEMs move metal identification to a single supplier: the plate is a small part of the bill of materials, but when it fails in the field it takes the equipment record, the serial traceability, and sometimes the safety message with it. Engineering and purchasing teams tend to treat it as a reliability decision rather than a commodity buy.

We have been the supplier of choice to more than 3,000 original equipment manufacturers since 1946, across construction, mining, agriculture, transportation, and general equipment manufacturing.

Metal nameplate types

Equipment and brand nameplates
Manufacturer identity, model, and brand graphics for the outside of the machine. Usually the most visible plate on the equipment and the one held to the tightest appearance standard.
Data and rating plates
Weights, capacities, electrical values, pressures, and operating limits. Often carries a UL mark or other approval, and often the plate that a regulator or inspector reads first.
Serial and VIN plates
Unique identifiers tied to one equipment record, produced with sequential numbering, bar coding, or customer-supplied variable data.
Property and asset tags
Ownership and tracking identification for fleets and capital equipment, frequently with bar codes or QR codes.
Instruction and lubrication plates
Procedure, schedule, and specification content mounted at the point of use, where an operator or technician actually needs it.
Component and sub-assembly tags
Smaller plates identifying motors, pumps, valves, gearboxes, and other assemblies inside the finished machine.

Nameplate materials and finishes

Material choice is the single biggest lever on how long a nameplate stays readable. These are the metals we stock and the gauges we run.

Aluminum — .005″–.187″
Bright, foil, mill, and brushed finishes. Lightweight with good corrosion resistance, temperature resistant, accepts a wide range of mounting adhesives, and machines and forms well. The general-purpose choice for indoor and moderate outdoor service.
Anodized aluminum — .005″–.125″
Black, clear, red, and gold. Sapphire-hard surface with exceptional abrasion resistance and durability against corrosion, extreme temperatures, chemicals, and solvents. Insulative and static resistant, with roughly 20-year exterior life. The most widely used material for industrial metal nameplates.
Metalphoto® — .003″–.125″
Matte, satin, and satin gold. The image is sealed beneath the anodic layer rather than printed on top, giving superior resistance to abrasion, cleaning solvents, most chemicals, UV, and extreme temperatures, with outdoor exposure of 20 years or more. UL recognized and specified where military-grade durability is required.
Brass — .020″–.032″
Brushed finish, UV coated. Resistant to saltwater, corrosion, and chemicals, and non-sparking. Chosen as much for appearance as for service life.
Stainless steel — .010″–.035″
2B mill finish. Exceptional resistance to chemicals and corrosion, and the preferred choice for caustic and acidic environments. Roughly 20-year exterior life.

Nameplate marking methods

The same plate can be marked several ways, and the right one depends on how long the information has to last and what will be attacking it.

Screen printing
Dense, opaque ink laid through a mesh stencil. Increases resistance to abrasion, chemicals, and solvents, and gives strong colour on both metal and flexible substrates. Sub-surface printing puts the image behind a clear face so the material itself protects it.
Metalphoto imaging
A silver-halide image developed inside the anodic layer of the aluminum. Nothing sits on the surface to wear off, which is why it is used for military, aerospace, marine, and heavy construction identification.
Metal etching
A chemical process that recesses the graphic into the metal, with the recess left natural or colour filled. The most durable marking we offer, and the usual answer for equipment living outdoors or in harsh conditions.
Digital printing
Near-photographic quality with variable data and no tooling. Suits short runs, serialisation, and artwork that changes between models.
Embossing
A matched die raises characters off the face. The information stays legible many years after harsh service has worn any printed image off the same plate.

Attachment and mounting

How a plate attaches matters as much as how it is marked. A nameplate that falls off has failed just as completely as one that faded.

Mechanical fasteners
Screws, rivets, or bolts through machined holes. The most durable option, cost effective, and it lets you align the plate exactly where you want it. We cut holes in almost any location from .05″ to 3.5″, with hole patterns machined to your print.
Pressure-sensitive adhesive
The fastest to apply and very durable when applied correctly — but difficult to reposition, and the adhesive has to match the surface. Low-surface-energy adhesives are available for powder-coated and plastic surfaces.
Welding
A permanent method for plates of sufficient thickness. Slower to attach, and appropriate when the plate will never need to move.
Hanging
Inexpensive and quick, using a hole or a tag. Suits identification that has to be moved or rearranged.

If you are not sure which is right, describe the mounting surface, its texture and finish, and the conditions it sees. Our engineers can recommend the attachment method rather than leaving you to guess at it.

Nameplate durability

Four things account for most nameplate failure in the field. Naming which one applies to your equipment is the fastest way to a material that will actually survive.

Abrasion
Scraping and repeated contact wear printed buttons, icons, and instructions until they cannot be read. Common on anything operators touch, push, or brush past. Anodized aluminum and Metalphoto resist it best.
Corrosion
Chemical and electrochemical attack from the operating environment. Hot, moist climates accelerate it; low-pH water accelerates it further; road salt and saltwater accelerate it a great deal. Stainless steel and brass hold up in caustic and marine service.
Chemicals
Alcohol, fuel, and acetone are the usual culprits, and they destroy printed labels, remove ink, and create adhesion failures. Etched and Metalphoto marking survives where surface printing does not.
Temperature
Extreme heat distorts images and wording and causes adhesive failure; extreme cold makes adhesives shrink, go brittle, and lose tack. Both ends of the range argue for mechanical attachment and a marking method that is part of the metal.

How a metal nameplate order runs

  1. Send your drawing or artwork. Our in-house art department turns a blueprint into a press-ready proof, at no charge. Quotes are free on every order.
  2. Review the proof. You approve artwork, material, finish, geometry, and hole locations before anything is cut.
  3. Production. Most jobs finish 7–10 days after the proof is approved, in an ISO 9001:2015 certified facility. Rush work runs 3–5 business days for an additional fee.
  4. Delivery and reorder. Orders ship within a 10% over/under quantity standard. Repeat releases can run against a stocking program, invoiced on delivery rather than on order.

Metal nameplate RFQ checklist

  • Size and shape, or the drawing if you have one
  • Where the plate mounts, and what surface it attaches to
  • The service environment — outdoors, wash-down, chemical exposure, temperature range
  • Material and finish if specified, or the application if you would rather we recommend one
  • Fixed artwork, and separately any variable data such as serial numbers or model codes
  • Attachment method, and hole sizes and locations if mechanical
  • Quantity, and whether this is a one-time run or a repeat program
  • Any UL, compliance, or documentation requirement the plate has to satisfy
