Custom Graphic Overlays for Industrial Equipment
One released equipment-interface record
Custom graphic overlays bringing controls, windows, legends, operating states, and brand graphics into a single part. Screen printed or digitally printed, laminated, die cut, and adhesive-backed in-house, with proofs from our own art department.
About graphic overlays
A graphic overlay is the face of your machine. It is the surface the operator touches, reads, and judges the equipment by — the printed layer carrying control markings, dials, legends, safety instructions, and your brand, bonded over the panel underneath.
It is also the part that takes the most physical abuse on the whole machine. Fingers, gloves, cleaning agents, sunlight through a cab window, and years of use all land on the same few square inches. An overlay that looks excellent at installation and chalky at year three is a brand problem as much as a functional one.

Dead front panels
Dead front graphics are applied so they stay invisible until the panel is back-lit. The face reads as a clean, unbroken surface, and an indicator, legend, or warning appears only when it is active.
Two reasons to specify it. It removes visual clutter, so an operator sees only what is currently relevant instead of scanning a face crowded with inactive markings. And it makes a machine look considerably more finished, because a dark panel with selectively lit legends reads as deliberate design rather than a printed sticker.
It needs to be planned early. The material, the ink density, and the backlight all interact, and the window has to be tuned so the graphic is genuinely invisible when off and clearly legible when on. Send the backlight specification with the artwork.
Sub-surface printing
Overlays are printed on the underside of a clear substrate wherever possible. The graphics sit between the material and the panel, so the operator touches the substrate, never the ink.
Nothing abrasive reaches the printing. A sub-surface printed overlay can be wiped down daily with cleaning agents for years and still read as it did on day one, while a surface-printed face would have started to ghost in the first season. This is the single biggest durability decision on an overlay, and it usually costs nothing extra.
Overlay materials and finishes
Polycarbonate — .005″–.125″
Clear gloss, clear gloss scratch resistant, clear matte scratch resistant, velvet gloss, velvet matte, velvet UV resistant, suede, and brushed. High temperature resistance, mar resistant, sub-surface printable, and easy to emboss, thermoform, and die cut. The standard overlay substrate.
Polyester — .002″–.010″
Clear marnot, bright gold, brushed chrome, bright chrome, matte chrome, silver typeable, white, and yellow. UL recognized, with 2–5 year expected exterior life. Chosen where the overlay is thinner or has to flex.
Velvet and matte finishes
Cut glare on operator-facing panels. Essential in a cab, outdoors, or anywhere overhead lighting would wash out the legend.
Scratch-resistant hardcoats
For faces taking heavy repeated contact, particularly keypads and touch areas.
Overlays and panels can be processed up to 24″ x 36″ in size.
Embossed keys
Raising a button area gives the operator something to find without looking at the panel. On equipment operated with gloves on, in poor light, or while the operator is watching the work rather than the controls, that tactile edge is what makes a panel usable in the field.
We emboss polyester and polycarbonate overlay faces on material up to .032″ thick. See embossing and forming.
Adhesives, cutouts, and fit
Adhesive selection
Matched to the panel it bonds to. 3M 467MP and 468MP for smooth high-energy surfaces, and 9471PC or 9472LE low-surface-energy options for powder coat and difficult plastics.
Windows and cutouts
Display windows, gauge apertures, and connector openings cut to your drawing.
Holes and shapesDigitally cut and punched to custom specification, with the outline following your panel exactly. See
die and digital cutting.
Registration
Because printing and cutting happen in one building, the graphics register to the cut edge and to the holes. That alignment is the usual casualty when printing and converting sit with two suppliers.
How an overlay order runs
- 1
Send the panel drawing and your artwork. Our seasoned art department turns a blueprint or artwork into a press-ready proof at no charge, and quotes are free on every order.
- 2
We recommend the construction. Substrate, finish, adhesive, any embossed areas, and the dead front approach if the panel is back-lit.
- 3
You approve the proof. Graphics, colors, cutout positions, and fit against the panel are signed off before production.
- 4
Production. Most jobs finish 7–10 days after the proof is approved, in an ISO 9001:2015 certified facility. Rush work runs 3–5 business days for an additional fee.
- 5
Delivery or release. Orders ship within a 10% over/under quantity standard, or run against a stocking program.
